Napoleon in Egypt - Part 2

Part 2 - Rules and Figures

(a)  I am  aware of only two 'dedicated' sets of rules:

"With Desaix in the Desert" by Will McNulty - there is a link on his website (but that doesn't work at the moment).  Perhaps leave a comment on his blog - http://willwarweb.blogspot.co.uk/  It is a campaign or 'discovery' set where the French general wanders around Egypt rooting out the Mamelukes, Ottomans and other 'natives'.

"Demi-Brigades in the Desert" by Robert Henry - available from the Yahoo group of the same name.  This set allows you to fight against the British as well as the Ottomans.  [There is also a list of army strengths in the Files section].

I don't play mainstream Napoleonics but any set, that doesn't glue itself to the grand scale, should be adaptable.

"Sharp Practice" has been used by one blogger (see part 3) also using the campaign supplement "Dawns & Departures".

(b)  According to PSR there are 14 plastic sets available for this (sub) period:

Odemars  PF09 - French Revolution
GerMan   0022 - Napoleonic French Camel Corps
Strelets M068 - French Line Infantry in Egypt
Strelets M069 - French Light Infantry in Egypt
Strelets  118 - French Hussars in Egypt
Strelets  078 - French Artillery in Egypt

GerMan   0023 - British Infantry in Egypt 1800
Strelets M070 - British Line Infantry in Egypt
Strelets M071 - British Light Infantry in Egypt
Strelets  119 - British Cavalry in Egypt
Strelets  079 - British Artillery in Egypt

HaT      8001 - Napoleonic French Mamelukes
Strelets  120 - Mamelukes
Italieri 6082 - Mamelukes

The GerMan sets are superb but unavailable in the UK.  Odemars figures are rarely seen (no great loss there).  So it's chunky Strelets or nothing then!

Other, indirect options might be:

Napoleonics (mainly bicornes)

Italieri    6092 - French Infantry 1798-1805
HaT       8229 - French Artillery 1805
Zvezda   8080 - French Napoleonic HQ Staff
HaT        8187 - Saxon Infantry (half for AWI)
Emhar    7215 - Spanish Infantry
HaT       8300 - Napoleonic Spanish Light Infantry
HaT       8302 - Napoleonic spanish Line Infantry
HaT       8171 - French Grenadiers & Voltiguers 1805
HaT       8062 - French Line Infantry 1805
HaT       8009 - French Dragoons (but I don't like them)
HaT       8170 - French Guard Chasseurs

Napoleonics (poss British)

HaT      8091 - Napoleonic Swedish Infantry
HaT      8231- Swedish Artillery
HaT      8304 - British Infantry Command
HaT      8098 - British Marines
Airfix  01735 - Waterloo Highland Infantry

Non Napoleonics (may be suitable)

Zvezda      8054 - Turkish Cavalry (for Ottomans)
Revell      02575 - Prussian Hussars 7YW
Waterloo      011 - Dervish Infantry
Esci              238 - Muslim Warriors
Strelets         109 - (Mtd) Bashi-Bazouks (Russo-Turkish War 1877)
Strelets     M054 - (Foot) Bashi-Bazouks (  "  ) - NOT YET RELEASED

In addition there are a few 20mm metal figures on the market:

Newline Designs - Ottomans & French - http://newlinedesigns.co.uk
Irregular Miniatures - Ottomans & Early French - http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk

part three - bloggers/wargamers who have already gamed this period.

Weekly Round Up

Saturday 27th January 2018 - Gt.Houghton

4 rounds of DBA v3.0:

(a)  Arab Conquest (Khwarijmians) 3.25c v Ummayad Arab 3.3 - my Knights outclassed Ian's cavalry [4:1 win]
(b)  Arab Conquest (main) 3.25b v Moorish 2.57 - my Cavalry caught Ian's Lh [4:0 win]
(c)  Syrian 4.6a v Early Crusader 4/7 - this time I was on the receiving end of Kn v Cv [1:4 loss] Incidentally the 'plough' stayed on this time.
(d)  Early Bedouin 1.6a v Early Sumerian 1.16 - for the first time I was defender but all the terrain fell into Ian's half of the table.  Although I shot off one battle cart (Kn) my Aux couldn't survive for long [1:4 loss].

Seems to me that army selection is paramount in DBA v3.0.

Next time it will be Big Battle DBA with 36 elements per side - Antigonid v Lysimachid.

Monday 29th January 2018 - WDW

DBM - Scots Common v Hussites - ended up a draw but there were some hairy moments.
DBMM Early Polish v Han Chinese - a 'historical' match-up (NOT)    with the Han being victorious (they were Tim's Polish).
Impetus - Samurai scrap
